They will enter the tiny incisions multiple times to extract from my bones because each draw can only accommodate so much fluid. As my patient is young and small, they need fewer stem cells than the average donation. I get general anesthesia for this unless I opt for an epidural. Apparently, when I wake up I will feel as if I’ve been hit by a horse, but that should go away in a few days because I am young and healthy.

Then, as I’ve consented to it, they will use some of my stem cells for a couple research projects, which is also awesome. The foundation will check in on my well-being at certain intervals, both for myself and the patient. Eventually, I might be able to meet the patient, but that depends on the policies of the donor center she is at and on her survival. There is the potential that your patient might request marrow or PBSC again. You never have to say yes -obviously, no one is allowed to demand access to another person’s body in order to stay alive.

I am not pregnant (I get to do one more pregnancy test, which thrills my girlfriend).
